Graded Gold Coins

WHAT ARE GRADED GOLD COINS?

In the United States, coins are graded according to the Sheldon Coin Grading Scale, which can be applied to any type of coin, gold or silver coins, as well as new or old coins. The Sheldon Coin Grading Scale gives a coin a grade from 1 – 70, with 1 being the worst and 70 being the best grade that a numismatic coin could receive.

WHO ARE THE BEST NUMISMATIC GRADING COMPANIES?

There are several numismatic coin grading companies out there. However, the most trusted ones are Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). To grade a coin, numismatists must first have a bright light source and a magnification device of 5x-8x. Next, the coin’s condition is examined to assess the extent of its circulation, if any. Finally, numismatists compare the coin to the Sheldon Scale (which is synopsized below) to determine its grade.

INVESTING IN GRADED GOLD COINS

From an investor’s standpoint, the overall value of the graded gold coins benefit from the metal value of the coin, the numismatic value of the coin, and also the grade of the coin. The value of the designated grade will increase the value more depending on the population in the grade received. These factors all help determine the price that a particular coin will receive in a price guide, which will ultimately determine what it will sell for on the open market.
