Description

The 1861 Seated Dollar proof has a significantly lower survival rate than most issues of the series. Of the original mintage of 1,000 coins, only about 250 are known to exist today. Up to 600 were melted, with the silver repurposed for lower denominations. This year also marks the first instance where two proof die marriages have nearly equal availability. This particular coin was struck from the earlier OC-P1 die marriage, featuring the sole proof obverse die paired with Reverse PA, which exhibits slight incompleteness between the leaves.
This remarkable survivor showcases a stunning patina with layers of rich color—yellow at the top, transitioning to sage, rose, and a delicate turquoise hue at the bottom. The reverse features peach and rose tones at the upper right, encircled by sage and grape, with turquoise and a thin halo of yellow at the periphery.
The PCGS population is only 5, with just 1 graded higher.
Listed at $47,500 in the PCGS price guide.
Offered at $24,500.
