United States Mint 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program

Dr. James Naismith introduced a new game to his physical education class on December 21, 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Just over half a century later, the BAA and NBL merged to form what we now know as the NBA. The Basketball Hall of Fame, which honors professional and amateur players, coaches, and contributors from the NBA, WNBA, NCAA, and around the world, opened about a decade later in 1959.

In 2020, the United States Mint is commemorating half a century of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with three coins, one $5 gold coin, one silver dollar, and one clad half dollar. The Hall welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors a year, giving them the opportunity to learn about the game, its history, and the amazing people who have built it up, participate in interactive exhibits, and test their basketball abilities.

A Premium for a Good Cause

As is required by Public Law, these commemorative coins will have a surcharge of $35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar, and $5 for each clad half dollar. This money will go towards building up educational programs and day-to-day operations of promoting the history of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and the game itself.

2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Design Competition

A few years ago, the mint held a competition to determine which American Artist's design would be placed on the obverse of the coin. Artistic Infusion Program artist, Justin Kunz created the winning design which depicts a man, woman, and a person in a wheelchair reaching for a basketball. The reverse side was created by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. It features a basketball going through a hoop. Similar to the Apollo coins of last year, this coin features a curved reverse side to depict the roundness of a basketball.

All $5 gold coins, silver dollar coins, and half dollar clad coin iterations are available for purchase in Proof and Mint State.
