Who is Thomas S. Cleveland?

Thomas S. Cleveland is an American coin designer, illustrator, and fine artist. Cleveland holds design credit for 15 different U.S. Mint coins and medals.

Cleveland, an Oklahoma native, majored in advertising and illustration and design, and minored in fine art painting at East Texas State University. In 2004, Cleveland was one of twelve artists selected from a pool of 250 applicants to serve in the United States Mint's Artistic Infusion Program. The Artistic Infusion Program was started in 2004 with the purpose of developing new coin and medal designs. Cleveland served in the Artistic Infusion Program until 2014, at which time he was only one of three remaining original Master Designers in the program.

Cleveland is best known for his reverse design of the American Platinum Eagle coin. The design features an outstretched American bald eagle covered by a federal shield with the inscription "FREEDOM."

Recently, Cleveland signed an exclusive insert label signature deal with the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

According to PCGS Vice President Mark Stephenson, "This signature deal will allow collectors to further enhance their modern U.S. coins with authentic hand signed insert labels by one of the U.S. Mint’s celebrated AIP Master Designers."

One of the more famous coins from the label is the new Defenders of Freedom coin. This 2022 Proof Silver Eagle coin from the West Point Mint is highly valued for its Thomas Cleveland signature and a label that pays tribute to disabled veterans.
